  1. This is a painful survey. Can anyone imagine giving the power of the presidency to any of the top contenders?

    It is often said “there are no atheists in a foxhole.” And I once read a response: this is an indictment of foxholes, not atheism.

    The fact that I could not support any of the top contenders is more a critique of the massive power vested in the presidency and the state more generally than a critique of the named individuals. To be honest, had we retained fidelity to the constraints imposed by the original Constitution, I would be relatively unconcerned about who held the office.

    Excellent point. And even further, I think the average American overestimates the influence presidents have over domestic policy. The real constitutional crime has been congressional abdication of foreign policy to the executive.
